Al-Mu’awwadhatayn
The Mu‘wadhatayn [al-Falaq and an-Naas] protect against the Shaytaan, the evil eye, destructive envy (hasad) and all other evils.
﷽
Revealed in Madinah.
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from the jinn and from the evil eye until the Mu’awwidhatayn were revealed, and when they were revealed he started to recite them and not anything else.”
Once the Prophet was bewitched so that he began to imagine that he had done a thing which in fact he had not done
It was only when Jibril (Gabriel) (peace be upon him) told him about what had happened to him that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent someone to bring the spell out from a well belonging to one of the Al-Ansar (the Helpers, inhabitants of Madinah who supported the Prophet). When he was rid of it, the spell was broken by Allah’s grace.
It was then that Allah (Exalted be He) revealed the two Surahs, which came to be known as Al-Mu`awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas).
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited them, he was cured. Praising these two Surahs, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
No one can use anything that is equal to these two Surahs in seeking refuge in Allah.
The fact that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was bewitched did not affect his conveying of the Islamic Message nor were the people around him affected by that. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) protected him from failing to convey the Message of Islam to people.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in their two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith on the authority of Ma‘mar from Al-Zuhry from ‘Urwah that ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
In his last illness, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to blow breath (into his cupped hands) and recite Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn (Surahs Al-Falaq and Al-Nas) and then wipe over his body. But when his illness aggravated, I used to recite them over him and pass his own hand over his body for its blessing.
Ma‘mar asked Al-Zuhry “How did he use to blow breath?” He said,
“He used blow into his hands and then pass them over his face.”
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to seek refuge with Allah from the jinn and from the evil eye until the Mu’awwidhatayn were revealed, and when they were revealed he started to recite them and not anything else.”
it is prescribed for the imam, the people praying behind an imam and the one who is praying alone to recite Ayat al-Kursiy silently, then for each of them to recite :
Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad , Qul a'udhu bi Rabbi’l-Falaq and Qul a’udhu bi Rabbi’l-Nas [i.e., the last three surahs of the Quran] silently.
After Maghrib and Fajr one should repeat Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, Qul a'udhu bi Rabbi’l-Falaq and Qul a’udhu bi Rabbi’l-Nas three times. This is the best because of the soundness of the reports that indicate all that we have stated below.
Muadh bin Abdullah bin Khubaib, narrated from his father, who said:
“We went out on a rainy and extremely dark night, looking for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), so that he could lead us in Salat.”
He said: “So I met him and he (ﷺ) said: ‘Speak’ but I did not say anything.
Then he (ﷺ) said: ‘Speak.’ But I did not say anything. He (ﷺ) said: ‘Speak.’
So I said: ‘What should I say?’ He (ﷺ) said:
‘Say: “Say: He is Allah, the One” and Al-Mu`awwidhatain, when you reach evening, and when you reach morning, three times, they will suffice you against everything.’”
Imam Ahmad in his book "al-Musnad" and other reported from Uqbah Bin Aamir that
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) ordered him to recite the three last Surah of the Qur'an after every prayer.
